Camp Easter Seals!
Session 2 log, 2004

August 1st, 2004

We are all Here at Camp, so Session Two is officially underway.

We have a small camp of only twenty three campers with fifteen counselors so a reasonable work load. It was great to see all our former campers, of the 23 campers there is only one new female and one new male. Be sure if you know of other adults with disabilities you tell them about our camp for 2005!

We had our traditional opening campfire. Our campers never seem to get tired of our same old corny jokes, skits and songs (thank goodness). We hope all of our parents had a safe drive home and will enjoy their week as much as we intend to enjoy ours.

Monday... A busy first full day at camp. The weather did not cooperate for swimming but the group that was supposed to go swimming willingly switched to a trip to the Gallup Indian Cultural Center. Steven, Tom, Tim, Delvin, Matt, and Roger enjoyed the visit to the cultural center and especially lunch out at The Oasis, a mideastern restaurant.

Back at camp campers enjoyed golf, archery, and tie dye. In the afternoon our ladies all went bowling. The evening activity was our popular Celebrity Balderdash in which our counselors dress up... tonight we had Wonder Woman, Austin Powers, Dorothy of the Wizard of Oz, Godzilla, and a special guest appearance by camper Nick as Batman.

We know this group of campers so well that they really play into our gags and add to the fun. Although the sun never shown today, spirits were bright!!

Day Two, Session Two. What beautiful weather we had today, I was just out in the cool, sitting with some of the campers looking at the beautiful cloud formations. Truly a treat. Dana is proving to be our bowling champion, with Tim leading the boys. Another group went to Gallup Cultural Center and then to the Oasis for lunch, Joe said he had never had Mediterranean food before and enjoyed it very much. We had a grat game of Camp with everyone winning prizes. The night activity was a Casino night with cards, roulette, a special appearance by Elvis and then a prize fight between the Perminator and White Thunder... hopefully we'll have some pictures up soon. Everyone is healthy and having fun... so far no problems and we are looking forward to the rest of our session.

Wednesday was another successful day. Ten of the campers went swimming at the indoor pool in Gallup, a beautiful pool and very relaxing. Others on camp enjoyed archery, golf, and arts and crafts. We have eleven campers in the play for this session and they are working hard on their dance routines for Friday night.

Tonight's activity was the talent show, one of my favorites. Our new camper, Maria, proved to be a real ham and was great both singing and dancing. Tim, Matt and Delvin did a great rap dance. Lots of fun.

Tomorrow half the camp will go to the Gallup Indian Ceremonial and see the Indian Dances and bull riding, Friday the remainder of the campers will attend. The sesion is speeding by, everyone is well and happy.

Our Session Two is drawing to a close... and it has been very successful. On Thursday half the camp went all day to the Gallup Ceremonial which included Indian Dances, arts and crafts, and bull riding... plus dinner out... ask your camper if they liked the Indian Buffalo meat soup! The remainder of the camp had a Beach Party at camp complete with beach ball volleyball, Beach Boy music, a hula hoop contest, and buffet. In the evening campers enjoyed the "Cup of Joe" cofee house. Friday the remainder of the campers will go to Ceremonial for the Indian Rodeo and other activities. Our last group will go bowling, we will make memory books, have an outdoor barbecue, see the play, and then dance. If your campers come home tired now you'll know why! Don't forget that pick up time is ten o'clock Saturday, no later than eleven.
