Camp Easter Seals!
Session 3 log, 2003

August 11th, 2003

We had a very smooth and quick check in. All twenty five campers were here by three o'clock and then enjoyed a "meet and greet" session with Bill. We have only three new campers this session and they are already settled in and excited about camp. Cindy brought her good friend Laura to camp and they had a great time today. We encourage campers to recruit other campers!

After tonight's dinner, the whole camp went in to Gallup and enjoyed the Indian Dances. The troop this week was Navajo and were enjoyed immensely by our campers. The troop was kind enough to pose for pictures with our campers and chat with them after the performance. We are looking forward to a great session three.

Our first full day of Session three has been a fun one..the entire camp journeyed to the ice Cave and Bandera Volcano. Everyone but Prissy made it to the top of the volcano... Prissy was fine, but just a little too tired for the hike! We then picniced before hiking down to the ice cave, which impressed everyone. We had planned our day perfectly because right after we got back to camp and went down for a rest it started to pour and we had a terrific thunderstorm. But the power stayed on and everyone stayed dry.

The evening program was Game Show Night. We had lots of "celebrities" visit us including Austin Powers, Superman, and Madonna! Lots of fun.

Tomorrow morning will be a crazy scavenger hunt for all the cabins then campers will rotate between arts and crafts, golf, and bowling in the afternoon. A great group of campers, some of whom have been coming to camp for twenty years!!!

A busy day at camp. This morning we had an all camp scavenger hunt and our campers really got creative. They had to "find" some very interesting items like "the footprint of the zuni monster", "a counselor with a crazy hairstyle", etc.

While the campers and staff were having fun I was meeting with a team of camp visitors from the American Camping Association. The American Camping Association visits our camp every three years to evaluate our camp facilities, staff, safety, and program. I am pleased to report that we passed our accreditation with flying colors, we met all but one of hundreds of standards.

Our visitors left being very impressed with the enthusiasm of our staff and campers. They said "It appears that one of the primary functions of your camp is to increase the self esteem and self confidence of your campers". That was very perceptive of them, because we do feel that our atmosphere of acceptance and respect is a positive influence for our campers.

After the all camp scavenger hunt the afternoon activities were varied; one cabin of ladies had arts and crafts, one cabin went in to the Zuni Cultural Center, the ladies also golfed, one cabin of gentlemen golfed, and one cabin of gentlemen went bowling in Gallup. Tomorrow morning is our all camp pool party a much anticipated event!

We had our all camp swim at the Elks Lodge pool in Gallup this beautiful sunny New Mexico morning and it was a great outing. There was plenty of room for our picnic after swimming. After rest hour our afternoon was a busy one with golf, a trip to Zuni, an off camp hike, and arts and crafts. The evening activity was the always popular but always messy "It's a Knockout". Campers really enjoy painting their counselors and making a cake on their counselors' heads in this evening of wacky events. We have a great group of campers and counselors who are really enjoying being together this last session of our 2003 season.

Thursday was a beautiful day here at Camp. Half of the campers went to the Gallup golf course this morning and the other half enjoyed the swimming pool. We all joined together for a hamburger barbecue in the park. After our return to camp and rest hour we had bingo and a baseball game. Our evening activity was the talent show and it was a great one. Our campers enjoy being in the spotlight and we enjoy cheering them on. Our session is coming to a close tomorrow, please remember parents that pick up is at 10:00 am on Saturday. Since this is our last day of the summer season our staff will be leaving camp to fly to their homes and we really need all campers to be picked up no later than eleven please.

Goodbye to all of our campers, parents, and supporters for this wonderful summer of 2003. We have had fun, made new friends, and provided a safe environment. I am very pleased and proud that not one camper or staff had to seek medical attention! We so appreciate the site provided by the Kiwanis here as it is so clean and safe and well maintained. Our final day of camp we had our campers sleep in, the girls had breakfast in bed, the gentlemen had cooked to order omelettes. While the ladies enjoyed a "beauty parlor" the gentlemen played a rousing game of baseball. Our all camp bowling tournament was this afternoon then we returned to camp to make memory boards with pictures and awards attached and then wound up with the "Dinner at the Diner, Elvis Presley Concert, and 'fifties dance". A rousing closure to a fun and high energy session.
